The link below at about.com gives a good basic list on what to take to Army Basic. The other services might differ at bit, but at least this is a start.
It seems stamps are like gold in basic, but on the whole send only the minimum number of things to him while there. He won't have much time to do much else until he heads off to his assignment. He'll be pretty busy for a while.
